My clients often ask me questions like this, and the truth is it's a question that's impossible to answer. Simply because I'm not you. And what is best for you personally, depends on... well, you.
Objectively, if your goal is to speak well in conversation we can say novels are probably better.
But honestly?
It really isn't going to make that much difference.
And the fact that people ask (and want to know the answer) simply tells me they don't know how to improve their English. After all, just passively reading or watching films will do little to grow your English.

You see, nothing is ever "better" than anything else. It's all about what you love doing, and what you don't.
Best Books for Learning English Are the Books You Love Reading
The books you read are unlikely to be a good source of study-material anyway (I talk about this in my free Rocket Launch Method training). Exposure to English you've already studied is important, yes, as is getting ideas and content to talk about.
But read a book because you want to read it.
Not because someone says you should.
